Birth of little brother Peter John in 1933 when John was 14.
War Years
John was a gyrocompass (Wikipedia) setter, a protected profession during the war. Not sure whether he worked on boats/ships and/or aircraft
but it was specialist occupation, and the gyrocompass was essential for accurate navigation.
It seems that John was disappointed not to have seen active service during the War, serving instead in the Home Guard. As a curious child asking questions about the War, I can remember him not wanting to talk about what he did during those years.
John’s older sister Betty (Bee) got married to Ivor Ashmore (above, right) in 1943. Her memories of the War appear on her page, and are a poignant selection of thoughts and recollections from this key part of the Horns’ life.
John married Kathleen Robertson in 1948 and moved shortly thereafter to Falmouth in Cornwall, where he had a job as a giro compass setter.
Their first daughter, Gillian Anne, was born in 1949. Margaret Pauline followed in August 1951. At this time the family were living in Avenue Road, Falmouth, walking distance from the Docks.
Work
Often involved riding out on a pilot boat to board a ship moored out in Falmouth Bay. Here he would make alterations to or repair the ship’s compass.
